Why should I become a pilot? There are as many answers to this question as there are pilots. Obviously, learning to fly will have a dramatic effect on your life. It will allow you to go more places and do more things in a day. You decide when to go and when to return. You make your own schedule. Anyone who is a pilot will describe flying as a "challenge," "sense of accomplishment," "fun," and "rewarding." The list is endless. Whether you use an airplane to expand the amount of territory you can cover in your business, or take your family on a vacation that otherwise would be impossible, flying is certainly practical. What are the requirements? The minimum age requirements are 14 for a student pilot permit and 17 for a private pilot license. There is no maximum age limit. Transport Canada requires a routine medical periodically to ensure that the pilot has no medical problem that would interfere with the pilot’s ability to fly safely. Glasses and contact lenses are acceptable. Applicants must be able to read, speak, and understand the English language. Physical handicaps are not necessarily a barrier to earning your pilot’s license. How long will it take? The average student pilot completes the requirements for a private pilot license within twelve months. Some students take as little as two months to complete the course. It's really up to you. How safe is it? As pilot-in-command of an aircraft, you are also in command of most of the variables that affect safety. With certified equipment, thorough training, and prudent judgment, your flying can be at a very high safety level. Statistically speaking, flying an airplane is safer than driving your car! Do I have to own an airplane? Not at all. Rental aircraft are available for local sightseeing or cross country trips at most airports. Do I pay a Membership Fee? Many flying clubs require you to pay an initiation fee as well as an annual membership fee just for the privilege of flying their airplane. This membership fee often ranges between $100 and $200 per year. At Niagara Air Academy there are no up-front fees, only quality flight training and superbly maintained aircraft. Where are we located? Niagara Air Academy is located directly to the left (west) of the main terminal building at the Niagara District Airport on Highway 55 in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Are there Pilot Employment Opportunities? Upon completion of the Commercial Pilot course, opportunities may be available for those who qualify, as a tour pilot with Niagara Air Tours Ltd. or as a flight instructor. For many, this is the first step toward their aviation career. How much will this all cost? The price depends on what license you would like to obtain. Everyone learns at their own specific rate. The specialized training at Niagara Air Academy will put the student in a specific program designed for their unique learning requirements. For specific pricings, please contact the Chief Flying Instructor. Opportunities exist for those who qualify to have their tuition paid for by the ontario government through Second Career Ontario.
