Getting Started in Aviation

Cessna 206Becoming a pilot may be the safest, most rewarding activity of your life.  Getting started is easier than you think.

Flying offers Canadians new challenges and freedoms.  Piloting an aircraft can be a satisfying hobby, a skill-testing sport, a new source for friendships, a path to a career, and a great way to travel.

Aviation in Canada consists of nearly 75,000 pilots flying over 40,000 aircraft from 2,000 airports.  With aircraft on wheels, skis, or floats, the destinations become limited only by the imagination.  Once you cross the U.S. border over 12,000 airports become readily available to explore.

Flying an aircraft is available to most people.  Getting started only requires a certain level of fitness and a huge desire.  Less than one percent of pilot applicants are actually found unfit to fly.  The minimum age varies with the type of license, but you are never too old to learn to fly.  The cost of flying lessons varies with personal ability and frequency of flight training with pay-as-you-go being the most popular way to fit your budget.School

The material for the course is diverse and interesting.  Specialized textbooks break it down into easy-to-learn small steps.  The knowledge required for the written exam covers navigation, weather, theory of flight, basic aircraft mechanics, air regulations, and general airmanship.

Transport Canada is the governing body of aviation in Canada.  This federal department sets the standards and tests for different levels of pilot qualifications and aircraft.

Pilot licenses are valid as long as the holder maintains their medical status, remains flight current, and does not run afoul with air regulations.  Once the pilot license has been obtained, rental aircraft are available for either local sightseeing flights or extended vacations in such destinations as Florida or other getaway spots.

SchoolNo matter who you are or why you want to fly, you'll share in the unique feeling of achievement and pride that comes with earning a pilot's certificate.  You'll have the freedom to go places and do things you couldn't do before, and you'll have a skill that will be an asset to your personal and professional life during years ahead.

As a pilot, you will be a part of an elite group of people who have gained a new perspective.  You'll see yourself and the world around you through different eyes.

Once you fly, life will never be the same!
